  • Meditation and Business

Blog by Robin Nickell, Mindful Mechanic

For some, meditation and business sound as connected as oil and water. Even though we have been utilizing scientific tools to capture data regarding it’s effects since 1950, some still find themselves thinking it’s just for monks or hippies. The truth is every PEAK PERFORMER you know of has some sort of mindfulness practice. And if you don’t believe me you can ask Oprah, LeBron James, Richard Branson, Russel Simmons, Arianna Huffington, and Tony Robbins just to name a few.

Why do all of these people and millions more utilize the practices of meditation?

The answer is both simple and complex because the benefits vary between individuals based on the types of meditations they practice and their consistency. I often use the analogy of the gym when discussing the implementation of meditation. The benefits, like going to the gym, require regular practice. Actually, more often then not you will hear me say, “It’s as important as brushing your teeth. You wouldn’t want to skip a day.”

Below is a listing of some of the benefits, which are both measurable and anecdotal. After seeing them you will understand how each would benefit both your business and personal life.

Less Rumination – Philosophers have stated we experience depression when living in the past and anxiety when living in the future. Mindfulness and meditation teach us to live in the present moment. An increased ability to remain focused is essential for problem solving.

Emotional Intelligence – Meditation allows opportunity for self-observation which results in less emotional reactivity and aids in logical, calm decision-making.

Greater Relationship Satisfaction – A wonderful side effect of emotional intelligence is a higher reporting of relationship satisfaction. Cultivating this skill-set results in an increased ability to work as a team, which is essential in any successful organization.

Improved Memory – Sara Lazar, a Harvard Neuroscientist, found that after only 8 weeks, participants in a MBSR or Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program showed an increase in the grey matter of the brain. The changes of particular interest were located in the frontal cortex, which is associated with working memory and executive decision-making.

Improved Physical Health – The possible benefits from meditation to your physical health are lengthy. Research suggests the following improvements are associated with meditation: lowered blood pressure, decreased migraines, relief from IBS (irritable bowl syndrome), decreased symptoms of anxiety and depression, increased immunity, and more!

It goes without saying that the most successful and effective individuals in business and in life are happy, healthy and resilient. The advancement of scientific analysis tools now allows us to measure those factors in practicing meditators. Given all the evidence before us, performing a daily practice seems like a no-brainer – pun intended!
