Pre-Conference Event: Sharing Ideas & Building Leaders

Thank you for joining us at the WEIWC pre-conference event in Dana Point!

The event kicked off with a moving keynote address from Ronnie Caplane, Chairwoman of the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, on “Resiliency and Effectively Managing a Political Environment.” Caplane discussed how women maneuver political environments to achieve success — giving attendees the advice to understand their network, be aware of what the decision-making process is, and finally, to nurture their environment and network within it. Following the keynote address, attendees engaged in a fireside chat and question & answer session with Ronnie Caplane.

One of the highlights of the event included a “Diversity and Inclusion” panel discussion. Mark Walls, Safety National’s VP of Communications & Strategic Analysis, featured the panel discussion on a recent blog post.

The moderator of the Diversity & Inclusion panel discussion was Joanne Wojcik, Director of Conference Programming at Business Insurance. The panelists included: Darrell Brown, Chief Claims Officer at Sedgwick; Euhnee Kim, CEO at EK Health; Cyndy Larsen, Area Vice President at Kaiser On-The-Job; and Dawn Watkins, Director, IDM at LA Unified School District.

The panel discussed how embracing diversity greatly benefits the workers’ compensation industry from treatment and employment perspectives. Specific cultures and ethnicities have different treatment expectations for medical problems, and understanding those differences allows the workers’ compensation industry to address medical issues more effectively. A diverse workplace promotes a higher awareness of employee differences — which leads to employers who are better able to address employee injuries.

After the Diversity and Inclusion panel discussion ended, there were many opportunities for attendees to connect with others in the industry, including table discussions and a beautiful reception at the Sunset Terrace, closing the event.

We had a wonderful time at this pre-conference event. We look forward to seeing you at our next WEIWC event!
